It's a big reason I liked the O'Brien hire. Which means job 2 of this hire is to prepare him to be just that. But as of now, Hart is the long term OC plan. Hey, if that gives OSU anything approaching what we just saw from Bama for the better part of the last 2 decades, then great. Maybe Kelly and Day mesh so well that they both love it, OSU steamrolls opposing defenses for years and national titles to come, Kelly decides to stay in this role the rest of his career, and Hart eventually moves on elsewhere. How good will he be at training the guy who IS Day’s and OSU's plan for long term OC, the guy who is the primary reason a young up-and-coming coach with his own offense was never the goal of this hire, Brian Hartline. Then there's the second part of this hire that almost nobody is talking about, but according to OSU's actions is equally important. NOT his offense ranked here in these stats in this year. Throw out all the "stats" of Kelly's past offenses, BECAUSE HE WON'T BE RUNNING THOSE, SO NONE OF THAT MATTERS!!!!! All that matters is how well he can pick up and understand Day’s offense, how much he can help improve the parts of it that need it, how good is he at organizing and getting the best out of all the coaches of the different units, and how good is he at calling the plays in the games. Thank you, thank you, thank you for a thread about the truth of this situation. I love both of these hires, the names may not be the sexiest out there but we don’t need them to be sexy, we need them to be a second Ryan so he can spend time elsewhere. Can chip recruit? Maybe but it also doesn’t matter because now Ryan doesn’t have to spend the extra hours on gameplan/practice schedule etc that he can be more involved in recruiting. Don’t look at this hire as “BoBs offenses sucked or Chips offense is outdated” because we were never gonna run chips offense, Chip is going to run Ryan’s offense. Those guys are a massive aid to Ryan because they can run a program, they can certainly run and offensive staff, handle gameplan, practice prep etc to take off Ryan’s plate so he can be more of the CEO we have all clamored for him to be. On paper a dynamic young OC like a Garrett Riley would be a take 10/10 at pretty much every program in the county over Chip or BoB but that’s not what we need. Ryan’s offense is not one of these niche Triple Option/Read Option/Air Raid offenses that work for a few years then get figured out and if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Will Ryan let BoB/Chip add some wrinkles, absolutely he will but there is nothing I have seen the last 5 seasons tht would suggest defenses are catching on to what we are doing. Doug Pederson, Eric Bienemy, Brian Daboll and Chan Gailey are a few of the OCs under Reid and ALL of them are considered good offensive minds and ALL of them Ran his offense in their time working under him and he always has and always will hold that Waffle House menu play sheet and interject plays whenever he sees fit. The more I thought about it the more I realized this is going to be more along the Andy Reid model. Nick Saban was not an offensive coach so whoever his OC was was going to run the OCs offense. It is important to understand (and was confirmed by BoB in his interview) that whoever he brought on board was going to run the Ryan Day offense. Ryan was not going to bring in a young hot shot coordinator to bring a creative change to the offense. There are some important things to recognize and understand about this Specific role.
